3 Common Car Insurance Myths
Trust us when we say we’ve heard them all. There are many myths and stigmas surrounding car insurance, so we want to help set the record straight.
Check out these three common car insurance myths and see if you believe the myth vs. the fact.
An accident that isn’t my fault won’t affect my rate.
Sometimes this is true, but not always. For example, if you’re in an accident and the person at fault files a claim while you do not, then yes, your rates remain the same. This is also true if the damages are handled out-of-pocket.
But if you file a claim, there is always the chance your rate can increase - even if you technically are not at fault. This is situational, of course. It’s just important to recognize your rate isn’t always locked in when filing claims.
Red cars cost more to insure.
It was thought the “flashier” the car, the riskier the driver. Wherever this myth came from, know that it is NOT true. The color of your car does not affect your premium. Often, when someone is writing your insurance policy, they don’t even know the color of your car. So, if you are dreaming of a bright red car, go for it.
While we can debunk the insurance myth, we cannot debunk the myth that “red cars are more likely to get pulled over for speeding.” That one is for you to figure out!
Comprehensive insurance means I’m completely covered.
While comprehensive insurance does cover a lot, it doesn’t cover everything. It was created to cover circumstances not in your policy, such as collision.
It does cover accidents involving animals, weather-related damage, and other incidents that could affect your car other than a vehicle collision. However, if you intentionally damage your vehicle, comprehensive insurance will not cover that under any circumstance.
