Types of Motorcycle Insurance Coverage

Motorcycle insurance is not a one-size-fits-all plan. The type of motorcycle, amount of protection needed, and even traveling distances can change which coverage is most beneficial. A combination of the available plans is typical to have coverage for different scenarios. Here are some of the most common coverage options for motorcycle owners:

Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is recommended for all motorcycle owners and riders. This basic plan covers costs associated with bodily injury and property damage to others if you're at fault in an accident. Having liability coverage protects against high medical and legal fees.

Collision Coverage

Collisions can happen to anyone, so it's essential to protect your investment in a motorcycle by investing in collision coverage. Collision coverage pays for damages from an accident with another vehicle or object.

Comprehensive Coverage

Should events, such as fire, theft, or vandalism, occur, comprehensive coverage protects the owner from having to repair or replace the motorcycle out-of-pocket. We can't always predict what Mother Nature will do or if we happen to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time; having comprehensive coverage can offer peace of mind in those situations.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

While it may not be standard to carry this type of insurance, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will ensure protection if a driver causes damages or injuries to you or your bike without insurance or insufficient insurance.

Medical Payments Coverage

As the name may indicate, this covers medical costs for injuries incurred in an accident for you or your passengers, regardless of who is at fault. It provides extra protection for any accidents or collisions requiring medical attention.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Similar to medical payments coverage, PIP may also cover lost wages and other non-medical costs associated with injuries from an accident.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance coverage provides help if your motorcycle breaks down while you're on the road. This may include anything from towing to onsite repairs to get you headed back toward your destination.

Accessory Coverage

This pays for damaged or stolen motorcycle accessories, like helmets, jackets, saddlebags, backrests, seats, and CB radios, and may be a worthwhile investment for anyone taking long trips or a frequent bike traveler.

Remember, the coverage options available may vary depending on your location and the insurance provider. Always check with your insurer to understand what's included in your policy.
