Deer Collisions: Do you have the right insurance?

Deer season is officially upon us and even those that are not avid hunters find themselves face to face with deer in the fall and winter months. This is the time of year that deer are most active and become a significant concern for drivers in Pennsylvania.

The likelihood of hitting a deer while driving is 1 in 167 nationally, but the chance in Pennsylvania is far greater at 1 in 63. What happens when you hit a deer? If you have the right insurance, you can submit a claim under your auto insurance policy to cover the damages. If you don’t have the right coverage, you will have to pay the expenses out of pocket.

The Right Insurance for Deer Collisions

When it comes to buying car insurance, many drivers look for ways to save money. Too often, drivers carry the state minimums which only include liability and property damage in Pennsylvania. Other coverages that can be added include comprehensive, collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and Personal Injury Protection.

To be properly covered in the event of a collision with a deer or other larger animal, drivers should add comprehensive coverage to their auto insurance.

What is Comprehensive Coverage?

Comprehensive coverage pays to replace or repair a vehicle that is stolen or damaged in an accident not considered collision. These accidents are often referred to as “an Act of God” and include a car being stolen, a vehicle damaged by a fire, a tree falling on a car, or damage from an animal.

If you lease or finance a vehicle, comprehensive coverage is usually a requirement. If your car is paid in full, deciding to add comprehensive coverage is entirely up to you. The additional cost varies depending on the insurance company. Considering the average deer collision claim costs more than $4,000, comprehensive insurance is a good way to protect your bank account from a large unexpected expense.
